Moluscum Contagiosum is a virus

How does Molluscum spread?

The only way Molluscum Contagiosum can spread is through physical contact with the virus. This means direct, skin-to-skin contact or by touching surfaces that have been in contact with an infected person.

Some common items that can spread Molluscum:

• Towels and washcloths

• Clothing

• Pool furniture

• Shared surfaces like countertops and tables

• Sports equipment

• Razors and combs

• Children’s toys

Children often contact Molluscum Contagiosum at school, by playing with other children and sharing things like toys and school supplies. It can spread quickly

The way most adults get Molluscum is through sexual contact. It’s led to some referring to the condition as a sexually transmitted infection, though this is not the best way to describe it. This type of risk is heightened if Molluscum bumps are in the genital area.
